HELP CWRU STUDENTS REBUILD NEW ORLEANS FISH FRY

Deuteronomy 8:3 Cafe Books & Music

Fish Fry-Days Benefit For Student Volunteers
February 22, 2007 ~ Noon - 6 p.m.

On the next two Fridays, February 22, 2007, 50% of the profit from our Fish Fry-Day Specials will be contributed to the fundraising campaign for students who will spend their Spring Break volunteering with New Orleans restoration efforts. The students will travel to New Orleans through the Center For Civic Engagement at Case Western Reserve University.

The students have created two webpages to inform the community about their efforts. An information page http://cwru.escape.googlepages.com with service projects, community partners and student profile is linked to their donations page at www.firstgiving.com/escapekatrina providing an opportunity for you to assist them on their journey.

No longer a headline story, New Orleans and other Gulf Coast communities still lay waste, resembling any war torn region. It looks like 14,000 bombs were dropped there instead of abroad. We urge your consideration in making a donation toward these students' valiant, and unselfish choice to spend their break volunteering.

Feel free to contact any member of the team (on the webpages) with questions, and to share this information with other community members.

Fish Fry-Day Specials
Whiting Dinners $6.50
served with greens, glazed carrots, rice, cole slaw and cornbread
Whiting Sandwich $3.50

Digital Storytelling Target

http://www.scholastic.com/dreamincolor/digitalstorytelling/index.htm

People have been telling stories for thousands of years. Storytelling allows us to teach values, share customs, preserve culture and create identity. Using computer video to combine snapshots and music clips with our own words, we can create unique digital stories. This modern-day storytelling will connect individuals and bridge cultures for generations to come.

Digital Storytelling

Writers and artists are cultural storytellers. They observe and relay the details of daily life and in turn celebrate the richness of cultural heritage and identity. Levi Romero, a New Mexico poet and teacher, found inspiration in a poem by George Ella Lyon. To celebrate his own Hispanic heritage, Romero then created a writing model for students of all ages that encourages them to explore, identify and express their own cultural heritages.

Objectives

Learn multiple software programs to create a multimedia video clip.

Explore personal and cultural heritage through multimedia activities that develop reading, writing and speaking skills.

Conduct research from a variety of sources such as the internet, live interviews and print, and gather images, music and ideas for making a movie.

Use digital storytelling as an interpersonal communication tool and explore diverse formats for sharing stories at home, at school and online.

Adopt-A-Classroom

Please let's help find classrooms in Cleveland that we can adopt. We can help spread the word in order to help teachers and students gain much needed resource and continue to Educate Cleveland.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

http://adoptaclassroom.com/index.aspx?Private=0

Mission Statement

Adopt-A-Classroom increases opportunity for student success by empowering teachers with community partners and funds to purchase resources for the classroom.
How the Program Works

1. Selecting a classroom
A donor selects a classroom and makes a contribution for the teacher to use and purchase much needed resources for the classroom. Donors may search for classrooms by geography, school name, teacher name or other search criteria. If a donor has no preference, Adopt-A-Classroom partners the donor with an underserved classroom in the community.

2. 100% of donation to the classroom
Adopt-A-Classroom directs 100% of the donation to the classroom teacher in the form of online credit. Adopt-A-Classroom takes $0 for administration.

3. Ordering classroom resources
The teacher uses the credit to shop online from a network of affiliate vendors that have partnered with Adopt-A-Classroom. The teacher has full discretion to purchase resources that meet student needs and increase opportunity for classroom success. If the teacher is unable to meet classroom needs with the affiliate vendors, Adopt-A-Classroom will work with the teacher on a one-to-one basis.

4. 100% accountability and transparency
Adopt-A-Classroom sends each donor an "Impact Report" which details item-by-item, dollar-for-dollar what the teacher purchased with the donation.

5. Corresponding and interacting
Donors and teachers communicate throughout the school year, so donors can learn about the difference they have made in the lives of the students. In most instances, donors receive thank you packages, artwork and other student created projects. Donors may choose to support the classroom in ways beyond the financial contribution, such as visiting the classroom, chaperoning field trips and other activities that are coordinated directly between donor and teacher.

6. Lasting relationship
As donors participate in subsequent years, they not only enjoy the cumulative effect of their efforts with each new class of students, but also develop a lasting and meaningful relationship with the classroom teacher.

2 million minutes
Written by: Ed Morrison
After finishing eighth grade, students in the United States, India and China each have about 2 million minutes until high school graduation. How they use that time will affect their futures and the futures of their countries.

That's the premise of a riveting new documentary, "Two Million Minutes: A Global Examination," about the lives of two high-achieving teens in each of the three nations.

Do U.S. students squander their high school minutes?

2 million minutes

We at Educate Cleveland, hope that you as students become change makers for the WORLD. How you spend your time is critical. Make sure that you kick your game up a notch. Despite all of the negatives that come against take them and turn them into positives and success for yourself. Only you can navigate the full potential of your life so use your 2 Million Minutes wisely.

Tiger Woods Foundation

Tiger Woods Foundation Announces the Fist Pump Challenge!
January 21, 2008

Anaheim, Calif.

Before the numerous trophies and the countless fans, a young Tiger Woods beat his father on the course for the first time. Although not recorded in any record books, this important event will always stand out as Tiger's first Fist Pump Moment.

On January 21, 2008, Tiger Woods announced the launch of his Fist Pump Challenge, an online contest designed to help young people identify and share their greatest achievements. As part of the Challenge, Tiger is asking young people everywhere to share their very own Fist Pump Moments with the world via www.tigerwoodsfoundation.org.

"It is important for young people to celebrate their accomplishments. The Fist Pump Challenge allows kids to highlight the moments in their lives that brought them closer to reaching their goals," Woods said. "I believe that small steps can lead to big changes."

According to Woods, a Fist Pump Moment can be any significant accomplishment in a person's life that has been crucial to achieving an ultimate goal, from improving your grades to getting the lead in the school play.

To share their Fist Pump Moment, children are asked, with their parents' permission, to visit www.tigerwoodsfoundation.org, and submit a video including their name, age, Fist Pump Moment, significance of that experience, and end with a fist pump. Those without video access can e-mail their Fist Pump Moment for posting.

Video and written entries will be voted on by website visitors with prizes going to the highest ranked submissions. Prizes include iPods, Tiger Woods '08 EA Video Games, and gift cards. Details on video content and challenge rules are available on tigerwoodsfoundation.org.

Later this year, the Tiger Woods Foundation plans to tie the Fist Pump Challenge into the Earl Woods Scholarship program, offering children in the Washington D.C. and Orange County, Calif. areas the opportunity to vie for a scholarship to college via the Challenge. The Foundation has plans to expand the scholarship program to a national level at a later date.

In addition to launching the program, Tiger and his mom, Kultida Woods, dedicated a statue to celebrate the legacy of Earl Woods and honor his efforts to reach millions of children. The 8-foot bronze replica of Tiger and his father was designed by Elliot & Ivan Schwartz of Studio EIS.

"Building on my father's legacy, I am challenging children to make a difference in the world, and to reach higher and farther than they ever imagined," Woods said.

About the Tiger Woods Foundation

Since its inception in 1996 by Tiger Woods and his father Earl, the Tiger Woods Foundation has reached an estimated 10 million young people through character development, career exploration and grant making programs. Programs developed and supported by the Tiger Woods Foundation all share a similar mission of empowering young people to dream big and to set specific goals to achieve their dreams.

Launched in February 2006, the Tiger Woods Learning Center is an innovative 14-acre, after school campus designed to inspire career exploration. Serving members in grades five through 12, classes include forensic science, robotics, engineering, aerospace, video production and home design. More information on the Tiger Woods Foundation and its programs can be found at tigerwoodsfoundation.org.

Health Legacy of Cleveland is governed by a twenty-five member Board of Trustees. The board is supported by an Executive Director.

Our Mission

"To increase the pool of African American physicians and dentists in the greater Cleveland area"

The decline in African Americans who are applying to medical and dental schools is of primary concern.

The mission reflects the past, present and, we hope, the future of African American youth, men and women who want to pursue health professions as physicians and dentists in the Greater Cleveland community.

The mission is a tribute to the long history among black professionals in Cleveland, whose similar efforts date back to the nineteenth century.

Vision

A singular, unwavering commitment to eliminate health care disparities among African Americans by partnering with the Cleveland Community.
